Your reliable supplier – since 1896

The IBC was founded 125 years ago when the city of Chur combined the electricity works, the gas works and the water supply into one company - today's IBC. Today, the IBC is the only cross-community company in Graubünden and your competent partner for energy and water in the region. A brief look back.

Production facilities

With our own production facilities, we ensure a safe, economical and environmentally friendly energy supply for the city of Chur and the surrounding area. In our hydroelectric holdings, our drinking water power plants and our photovoltaic systems, we generate around 169 GWh of renewable electricity every year.

You can find more information about the electricity supply here.

Drinking Water Power Plants

We also use our drinking water from the mountain springs to generate electricity. We let the spring water from the higher elevations flow through pipes into lower reservoirs. The difference in altitude creates pressure, which drives turbines. In the Parpan spring house and in the Churwalden, Städeli, Grida, St. Hilarien, Spitzegg and Berggasse reservoirs, we produce ecological electricity. The production can cover the annual electricity needs of over 1,500 households.

Photovoltaic Systems

We have been producing our own solar power since 2015. To do this, we use existing infrastructure such as roofs and walls of buildings. Together with the Landquart company dhp technology, we have created the world's first solar folding roof over a sewage treatment plant at the Chur wastewater treatment plant. This photovoltaic system is pioneering in that electricity is produced where it is needed. The innovative solar power plant won the Watt d'Or award from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) and the Swiss Solar Prize 2019 in the renewable energy category.
